Small Planet first airline to offer full Virtual Reality entertainment on board

Small Planet first airline to offer full Virtual Reality entertainment on board

Small Planet Airlines will begin offering virtual reality (VR) inflight entertainment on board some of its aircraft from 5th of September 2018. The fast-growing European leisure carrier has selected the Inflight VR solution, in a partnership with service provider Newrest’ TRE³ and connectivity provider AirFi, for offering its passengers the full benefit of virtual reality.

The service will initially be available on their Airbus A320s that are operated from Amsterdam to destinations in southern Europe such as the Canary Islands and Rhodes in Greece. After a successful implementation in the Netherlands, the plan is to progressively expand the service to further destinations towards the end of the year.

“We are very proud to be the first to offer this new in-flight entertainment feature to our passengers,” says Lina Griciuvienė Head of Inflight Services Division at Small Planet Airlines. “Being a fairly new player in the leisure travel field, we want to offer the best and most advanced, and are convinced this all new Inflight VR concept will greatly contribute to making the travel experience on board our aircraft much more pleasant, while also helping us push our ancillary revenues to the next level”.

“We are the largest AirFi user in the world. Every day on board our 28 aircraft there are around 200 AirFi boxes flying around, and our largest base in Katowice (Poland) accommodates 80 of them. As a young company, we are always hungry for new. So that is why we are extremely happy that we can put some innovation onboard and participate in the new project together with Inflight VR” says Piotr Bożyk Senior Inflight Specialist at Small Planet Airlines responsible for the AirFi project.

Using a highly ergonomic, fully stand-alone and autonomous headset, Small Planet passengers can get completely immersed into a virtual reality world, hereby forgetting they are in a space-restricted cabin. They will not only be able to watch videos or a theatre play in VR, but can also explore interesting places as if they were there. They can, seamlessly practise certain relaxing activities, go VR shopping, or enjoy some conventional gaming.

The programme contents, developed in this instance in partnership with connectivity provider AirFi, are fully tailored to Small Planet’s specific requirements and adapted to the inflight environment, hereby avoiding any risk of potential motion sickness. “AirFi always likes to be in the forefront of supporting cabin innovations and Inflight VR is a great example of this”, comments AirFi CEO Job Heimerikx.

Furthermore, through its partnership with logistics and duty-free provider TRE³, Inflight VR provides the airlines with the benefit of generating additional ancillary revenues through a series of sales opportunities on premium contents and other such programmes, including gaming and VR connection to outside vendors. “As innovation and technology is part of the TRE³ core business, we are delighted to participate in the Virtual Reality (VR) journey of the aviation world with Inflight VR. With pride, we are serving Small Planet as the first customer to bring passenger experience to new heights!”, says TRE³’ Country Manager Jalal Zriouil.

“Seeing a young, dynamic and forward-looking carrier like Small Planet select our in-flight VR entertainment system is a great endorsement of our concept”, adds Inflight VR Chief Commercial Officer Raphael Baumann. “We look very much forward to the deployment of this partnership and its subsequent successful expansion”.

Thomas Cook Group Airlines more than triples AirFi equipped aircraft for Summer 2018 season and Warner Bros named first major Hollywood Studio to approve its non-App browser-based DRM technology.

AirFi Wireless IFE is expanding from 10 aircraft last year to 34 Thomas Cook and Condor short-haul leased aircraft. AirFi clients now have access to Warner Brothers’ extensive Wi-Fi streaming catalogue – all without the need for passengers to preload an App.

March 22, 2018 – THE HAGUE:  AirFi, the market-leading provider of portable, wireless IFE and onboard digital cabin management platforms, reveals two major developments ahead of its busiest ever summer season.

Thomas Cook Group Airlines confirmed at AirFi’s inaugural Innovation Day last week that it will expand the number of AirFi equipped short-haul leased aircraft from 10 in 2017 to 34 for the summer 2018 season.

In addition, AirFi also announced that it has received formal approval from Warner Brothers – the first of the six major Hollywood Studios – for its game-changing browser-based DRM technology that allows passengers to stream DRM-protected content without the need to download Apps in advance.

“Passenger feedback shows they want IFE on the short-haul leased aircraft we use during the summer and we have seen conversion for browser-based IFE like AirFi is a lot higher than an app-based IFE. This summer we will have an enhanced content selection, integrated sales of AirFi premium access codes through the crew’s onboard sales devices, enhanced complimentary destination content and we will be introducing new ways to drive revenues through content-related advertising.” commented Tracy Barr, Head of Product at Thomas Cook Group Airlines.

Enabling clients to gain access to the widest possible choice of premium content, yet keep to the core principle of universal access for any device – via a browser not an app – has been a motivating factor for AirFi.

Together with preferred CSP West Entertainment, AirFi introduced non-DRM content from a number of highly supportive leading APEX distributors early last year, including the independent Hollywood studios and major TV distributors like Turner, CBS, ITV, Discovery and BBC.

Gaining the first approval for non-App DRM content is another watershed moment for AirFi.

“We are delighted to announce AirFi will be featuring content from the iconic Warner Bros studios. We serve a great many leisure traveller-focused airlines around the world so as you can imagine there is huge excitement to offer passengers blockbuster movies and hit TV series from the WB stable such as DC Comics, LEGO, Lara Croft, Harry Potter and Big Bang Theory.” added Martin Cunnison, CCO AirFi

Thomas Cook Group Airlines to expand Sunstream wireless IFE offering with AirFi, as latest plans are unveiled at AirFi’s inaugural Innovation Day

March 14 – THE HAGUE: Speaking at last week’s AirFi Innovation Day in The Hague, Tracy Barr, Head of Product, Thomas Cook Group Airlines, revealed that 34 aircraft will be flying with the AirFi Wireless IFE platform this summer season; an increase of 24 compared to last year. “Passenger feedback shows that they want IFE included on the short-haul leased aircraft that we use during the summer,” she said.

Passengers connect to the AirFi service and stream content via a browser, removing the need to download an app ahead of the flight. Thomas Cook’s own content can be accessed for free, while other content – including movies, TV shows, viral videos, magazines and games – can be accessed for €4/£4.

“We have seen that the conversion for browser-based IFE like AirFi is a lot higher than an app-based IFE,” Barr stated. ”This summer we will have an enhanced content selection, integrated sales of AirFi premium access codes through the crew’s onboard sales devices, enhanced complimentary destination content and we will be introducing new ways to drive revenues through content-related advertising.

Meanwhile, during the AirFi Innovation Day, which also included the opening of the company’s awesome new HQ in The Hague, AirFi revealed a number of product enhancements that are currently in the works.

It is working with as-yet-unnamed antenna providers with a view to expanding its offer to include connectivity that supports low-bandwidth applications such as instant messaging and real-time transaction verification inflight.

And that the Venus AirFi Box – the latest version of the company’s portable IFE solution – now supports fully-autonomous operations, thanks to in-built technology that gives it real-time location and state awareness. Automating the process of the boxes switching on and off, configuring flight details and transferring data to and from the aircraft to the cloud, and so removing the need for flight crew to manually undertake these tasks.

January 23, 2018 – DUBAI:  AirFi, the market-leading provider of portable onboard digital platforms, today announced another round of major new contracts to further expand its airline portfolio. AirFi continues to add new clients every month, underlining the long term strategic relevance of its platforms to airlines undertaking digital transformations of their onboard offer.

“Welcoming two new larger fleet operators into the AirFi client family and tripling the AirFi-enabled fleet at one of our longest-standing airline customers, represents a hugely exciting opportunity for us and the level of confidence our clients have in our technologies and capabilities.

Again, all three customers have opted to entrust AirFi with our fully-outsourced turnkey service, providing not just the AirFi Wi-Fi platform but also sourcing a wide range of curated content across international and regional distributors and adding to the number of languages and written script variants that AirFi now supports.

We are continually looking at how AirFi can be as simple and powerful to deploy across large fleets as it is for smaller fleet operators and into new markets. We are already seeing a high level of interest in our simple but elegant aircraft-powered alternative to using the 24-hour battery power, so AirFi Boxes remain classified as carry-on equipment, but can stay onboard instead of rotating daily with the catering bar sets.

The magnitude of this new deal with a major regional catering organisation in the Middle East, really underlines how robust and adaptable our technologies are considered, being slated for rapid deployment throughout their entire organisation.” comments Job Heimerikx, CEO.

ITV teams with AirFi to launch “ITV Inflight”: game-changing ‘same-day’ Catch-Up TV service and must-see Boxsets

Thomas Cook named as launch customer for latest AirFi premium content collaboration, with ITV plc, the UK’s largest commercial broadcaster

  • AirFi and ITV tie-up to enable same day episodes as UK transmission, last 7/14 days and boxsets catalogue
  • ITV shows include most watched soaps, sports and family entertainment in the UK
  • Next Gen AirFi Box offers 1TB and up of data storage and daily updates enable ‘always-fresh’ content
  • All through browser: No Apps Required!

June 26, 2017 – DUBLIN: AirFi, the market-leading provider of portable onboard Wi-Fi platforms, is thrilled to unveil another major innovation in its growing Premium Content portfolio at the Future Travel Experience Conference here in Dublin. See the demo at the FTE Europe AIrFi Booth E21 at RDS, Dublin on Jun 26-27, 2017.

AirFi and the UK’s largest commercial broadcaster, ITV plc, announced today the launch of “ITV Inflight” – must-see catch up TV and boxsets, on-demand, at 30,000ft. And jointly are delighted to confirm that Thomas Cook Airlines will launch the service aboard selected AirFi-equipped aircraft this summer.

The award-winning AirFi Box enables ITV to create a similar experience inflight that over 17 million registered users enjoy through the ITV Hub, its terrestrial on-demand service.

The efficacy of AirFi daily operational and content upload cycles means passengers will soon be enjoying the very latest episodes of many of their favourite ITV shows, even on the same day inflight as national UK transmission (first-play) date. Crucially too, ITV Inflight fits AirFi’s mission to source the best content that does not require pre-flight App downloads.

“The UK & Ireland market presents an enormous opportunity for AirFi and many airlines represented here in Dublin over these next two days will immediately understand the potential of ITV Inflight. Blockbuster shows featuring on ITV Inflight are set to include Coronation St, The Voice, Love Island, I’m A Celebrity, Jeremy Kyle, Ant & Dec’s Saturday Night Takeaway. Shows that consistently draw huge UK and international TV audiences, but also dominate daily news, gossip columns, social media and watercoolers. ITV Inflight reimagines inflight entertainment. It starts to make IFE feel like the experience we all now expect at home – the latest catch up episodes & binge-worthy boxsets of the biggest and best shows, on-demand.” says Job Heimerikx, CEO of AirFi.

“We are hugely excited to partner with AirFi and Thomas Cook Airlines to launch ITV Inflight this summer. ITV Hub had over 1 billion requests for the first time in 2016 and the potential to significantly expand our content reach into the largely ‘offline’ inflight market attracted us to the flexibility and daily content update capability of the AirFi platform. We have created ITV Inflight to be deployed either as a free-to-air or premium pay-per-access service, mirroring the structure of ITV Hub. Across the travel journey, ITV Inflight will also provide the missing link between the UK’s ITV Hub and our international subscription service, ITV Essentials.” comments Ben Halabi, Business Development Manager, Pay & Distribution ITV plc

As the most recognizable name in travel and one of the UK’s biggest leisure airlines, Thomas Cook Airlines operate a seasonal (ACMI) fleet of aircraft equipped with AirFi. Having recently launched an enhanced premium content package on the AirFi fleet, the addition of ITV Inflight enhances the value proposition for passengers flying this summer.

“We are delighted to be the first airline ever to launch ITV Inflight through our close collaboration with AirFi. ITV and Thomas Cook customer demographics are highly matched, so ITV Inflight’s catch up and boxsets is a perfect addition to drive adoption of our pay-to-access premium IFE packages. Our passengers want to see the very latest episodes of their favourite shows and that simply hasn’t been possible to deliver economically via other IFE systems.” adds Ben Todd, Head of Communications, Thomas Cook Airlines.

AirFi launches Premium Content packages for airlines

AirFi Box IFE streaming platform now features latest Hollywood movies, hit TV shows, viral videos, best-selling digital newspapers and magazines without requiring passengers to download an app.

• AirFi Box security approved by leading Hollywood Studios and other major distributors
• Premium Content packages affordable and easy to modify or update for airlines, while studio content remains safe from piracy
• Partnership with LA-based boutique CSP West Entertainment instrumental in creation of premium offering.

April 24,, 2017 – BERLIN: AirFi, the market-leading provider of portable onboard Wi-Fi platforms to airlines, today announced that has launched an innovative and truly economical new range of curated Premium Content packages for all airline customers.

AirFi and West Entertainment, the LA-based boutique content service provider founded by industry innovators Rick Warren and Kate Groth, have collaborated closely to tailor an offering of premium movies & TV content designed to meet AirFi’s diverse client portfolio requirements. From this offering, airlines can build their own packages of content based on passenger demographic, budget, content renewal cycles, viewing data, or other criteria.

“AirFi encouraged us at West Entertainment – as well as the wider international content community – to collaborate and find new ways to keep pricing as lean as possible for even their smallest airline fleet operators. We examined ways to supply without the need for DRM protection where possible, thus avoiding the hassle of airlines having to introduce native apps for passengers to view the content onboard. We’ve been delighted with the response.” said Kate Groth, VP Everything, West Entertainment.

Job Heimerikx, CEO AirFi commented: “Having now grown to 30 airline clients, we’re even more dedicated to keeping the AirFi passenger experience the best in the industry. That means considering all demographics, regions, languages and technologies. We can now offer a full suite of international entertainment options, sourcing premium content from leading movie studios, TV distributors, online news & entertainment platforms and digital publishing houses. As ever, it is also our mission to translate this into simplified and highly competitive pricing.”

In recent months, AirFi secured formal security approval from a number of key IFE content suppliers, including major and independent Hollywood studios and TV distributors. Increasingly, these content sources are providing their premium content to AirFi without DRM (digital rights management) or by using AirFi’s “app-free” technology, where DRM is required.

Packages consist of new release and classic feature films, top-rated television box-set and catch up series – where comedies, dramas, documentaries and kids programming feature highly.

“We based our new Premium Content offer on three simple tiered-pricing levels that start as low as €500 per package per aircraft per month,” says Heimerikx. “We can then flex these to meet individual airline requirements. Over half of our client base immediately responded with requests for proposals and our first Premium Content customers go live in May this year,” he adds.

  • Further expanding services within its existing airline customers
  • New deployments with major European bus and train operators

April 3, 2017 – HAMBURG:  AirFi, the market-leading provider of portable onboard Wi-Fi platforms, today announced a flurry of new airline customers as the aviation industry comes together for the annual Aircraft Interiors Expo in Hamburg this week. In addition, the company is now successfully establishing its disruptive technology into new passenger experience markets.

“I’m extremely pleased to announce that we have been selected by six new airline customers since our highly successful presence at APEX in Singapore last October. I’m also delighted to report that we have won new customers in other #PaxEx sectors – initially within bus and rail. We proudly welcome Aramco Aviation, Cobalt, Freebird, Salamair, Tailwind, and Yakutia Airlines to the AIRFI.AERO family of AirFi Portable Wireless IFE and Connected Crew Retail EPOS partners. AirFi is the fastest selling and most trusted portable wireless IFE solution in the market and we are consistently proving how to deliver a highly cost-effective way to improve onboard retail and digital passenger experiences.” Job Heimerikx, CEO AirFi comments.

The new airline clients confirm AirFi’s status as a truly global operation as well as increasing its footprint closer to home in Europe. These airlines come into the company’s client portfolio at a time when AirFi is also expanding services within its existing client base. AirFi is now flying on more than 300 aircraft worldwide from regional jets to wide-bodies serving 30 clients and over 5 million happy users so far have enjoyed the AirFi experience.

The addition of new deployments on major European bus and train operators, further indicates how AirFi’s highly regarded technology, proven in the aviation market, can be simply adapted to other markets looking to differentiate their onboard passenger experience.

“We are just about to reach a major milestone of 5 million cumulative flying hours across our deployed fleet of AirFi Boxes since we launched just a few years ago. AirFi Boxes are the original portable IFE and – in an increasingly crowded market – stands out as the most widely deployed and reliable solution in its class.” explains Martijn Moret, CIO AirFi.

“By further adding these new vertical market deployments to our portfolio, we have demonstrated how our aviation-standard hardware can be adapted with a simple software change to enable new operating models where primary power needs to come from the vehicle and use the long-life internal battery for back-up power and overnight data synchronisation. Also for the first time we are enabling the AirFi Box onboard connectivity module to enable live internet access, expanding even further the possibilities for our customers.” continues Moret.

More details yet to come on these new bus and rail partnerships.
