AirFi revealed as 5th largest global Wireless IFEC vendor and tops 2019 study of the fast-growing portable W-IFEC sector

A detailed study of Wireless IFEC market reveals AirFi Systems account for over half (56%) of all global portable deployments to date – three times more than its closest peer group rivals.

Poll also reveals AirFI has the highest number of individual Wireless IFEC clients, almost twice more than any other fixed or portable system provider.

June 18, 2019 – The Hague, Netherlands  | AirFi, the market leader in portable Wireless In-Flight Entertainment systems and cabin retail technology has topped a study of Wireless IFEC vendors, with more than half (56% share) of all global portable deployments and has been selected by more airlines (40 clients) than any other vendor, topping a list including the industry Tier 1 OEM suppliers.

Results from a detailed survey of global Wireless IFEC deployments conducted at the end of the first quarter of 2019 which gathered data on over 30 providers of portable and installed systems, confirmed AirFi’s status as the number one provider of flexible (portable) Wireless IFEC systems.

AirFi Systems now account for more than one in two of all Portable Wireless IFEC deployments globally, and the rapid rise in portable popularity has propelled AirFi to become the fifth largest Wireless IFEC vendor by a number of aircraft served and the only privately-owned company in the top five.

The study also revealed AirFi to be number one in the popularity poll, having been selected by nearly twice the number of clients than the next most popular system. Lower cost of ownership, more flexible use cases and rapid, fleet-wide deployment have underpinned AirFi’s accelerated rise in the rankings over the past year.

“It’s fantastic to see from these survey results, really healthy growth – and competition – right across our marketplace, as more airlines join the global Wireless IFEC family. Our unique holistic approach – being the only vendor specialising in proprietary, rapid deployment Wireless IFEC hardware and suite of e-enablement technologies and services – has been resonating really strongly with customers. So I’m delighted to see AirFi top the polls as the world’s most popular Wireless IFEC system and ranked in the top five of global vendors.” Comments Job Heimerikx, CEO AirFi.

AirFi announced last month the market’s largest ever portable Wireless IFEC deployment with Lion Air Group and this month revealed two more new clients – Air Arabia and Air Seychelles have joined the AirFi Wireless IFEC family.

AirFi announces two new clients in the Middle East and Africa, Air Arabia and Air Seychelles join the AirFi Wireless IFE family.

Air Arabia becomes AirFi’s seventh customer in the vibrant Middle East North African market as AirFi asserts its market sector dominance, adding the region’s largest LCC fleet.

Air Seychelles sign agreement to deploy AirFi on its all new Airbus A320neo aircraft set to join the fleet from July 2019.

AT A GLANCE

  • Air Arabia has been a regional success story – MENA’s first and largest LCC – and recently celebrated its 15 years with the launch of a new brand identity.
  • AirFi “SkyTime” has entered into service across Air Arabia’s fleet of A320 aircraft.
  • Air Seychelles, 40% owned by Etihad, is the national airline of the Republic of Seychelles and is a pillar of tourism, the island nation’s strongest growing
    economic sector.
  • AirFi will provide wireless streaming inflight entertainment aboard its new Airbus
    A320neo aircraft.

June 17, 2019 – The Hague, Netherlands – AirFi, the leading provider of
flexible Wireless IFE systems and cabin retail technology, announces Air Arabia
has become its newest and largest customer in the Middle East region and Air
Seychelles have signed for AirFi Wireless IFE across their all-new A320neos.

Following a successful 10-aircraft trial over recent months, Air Arabia signed with AirFi for its fleet of short- and medium-haul aircraft stationed in Sharjah. “SkyTime” will feature a comprehensive line up of multi-language, premium AVOD content tailored to their demographic of family and price-conscious business travelers around the Gulf region, Northern Africa, Indian subcontinent, Russia, Central Asia and Europe.

“We are thrilled to welcome Air Arabia to our Wireless IFE family as we further
strengthen our leadership in this exciting fast growing aviation region. Our long-standing track record of success enables us to serve ever larger and more complicated fleet networks like the new operation in Sharjah.” comments Job Heimerikx, CEO AirFi.

Critical to the Air Arabia decision was a clear demonstration of the AirFi system’s flexibility, performance and reliability.

Air Seychelles, the national airline of the Republic of Seychelles has selected AirFi for its new Airbus A320neo entertainment platform to modernise the onboard digital experience, providing guests greater flexibility, value and control when using their own
smartphone, tablet or laptop devices.

Air Seychelles joins the AirFi global family, now spanning 65 countries and expands the company’s regional footprint following recent implementations at Air Namibia and Nile Air in Africa as well as by other A320neo operators in Europe, Asia and the Middle East.

Remco Althuis, Chief Executive Officer of Air Seychelles said: “The aviation industry is evolving globally and aircraft operators are increasingly looking into ways to further enhance the experience of their guests in addition to ensuring their business generates better revenue.

“AirFi will allow Air Seychelles to operate more efficiently because with the elimination of seat-back screens, guests will need to use their own devices and headsets to stream the entertainment content. Therefore with less on board equipment and less impact in the weight, Air Seychelles will be able to better generate its fuel efficiency.

“At the end of the day throughout the transformation plan our mandate is to ensure that the products Air Seychelles chooses are reliable, sustainable, plus cost effective and after intense research we have identified AirFi as the best option moving forward.”

Job Heimerikx, Chief Executive Officer of AirFi highlighted: “We warmly welcome Air Seychelles to the AirFi family. We look forward in providing entertainment and joy to their passengers. AirFi’s robust structure makes the system ideal for operators in wonderful though remote places like the Seychelles.”

  • Thirteen KLM B747-400s have been enhanced with the latest generation AirFi Wireless IFE systems, launched simultaneously fleet-wide in April 2019.

APRIL 3, 2019 – HAMBURG, Germany  AirFi, the leading provider of flexible Wireless IFE systems and cabin retail technology, announced that KLM Royal Dutch Airlines has become its latest customer in Europe.

Since creating the world’s first portable Wireless IFE system back in 2014, the aviation industry has contemplated whether the popularity of Wi-Fi personal device based IFE systems will be the death of traditional wired in-seat systems? AirFi will for the first time be deployed alongside existing installed IFE to enhance the experience on the 747s.

“The quality of the current inflight entertainment in the Boeing 747-400s is no longer of the level that it should be. Because the aircraft will disappear completely from the fleet in the coming years, investing in new [embedded] systems is no longer profitable. With the AirFi system onboard, we can provide the passengers with high quality content via their own mobile devices.” said Rene de Groot, COO KLM.

KLM, the world’s oldest airline operating under the same name for a century, had planned to fully retire its 747s by 2020, but by deferring its A350 deliveries last year, has given this fleet an extended active life.

“As a relative newcomer to this vibrant industry, we are honored to have our own small part to play in the lifetime of this legendary aircraft. We are hugely proud that KLM and AirFi will become the first to deploy a full-spec portable wireless IFE system alongside an existing installed in-seat IFE system.” adds Job Heimerikx, CEO AirFi

Small Planet first airline to offer full Virtual Reality entertainment on board

Small Planet first airline to offer full Virtual Reality entertainment on board

Small Planet Airlines will begin offering virtual reality (VR) inflight entertainment on board some of its aircraft from 5th of September 2018. The fast-growing European leisure carrier has selected the Inflight VR solution, in a partnership with service provider Newrest’ TRE³ and connectivity provider AirFi, for offering its passengers the full benefit of virtual reality.

The service will initially be available on their Airbus A320s that are operated from Amsterdam to destinations in southern Europe such as the Canary Islands and Rhodes in Greece. After a successful implementation in the Netherlands, the plan is to progressively expand the service to further destinations towards the end of the year.

“We are very proud to be the first to offer this new in-flight entertainment feature to our passengers,” says Lina Griciuvienė Head of Inflight Services Division at Small Planet Airlines. “Being a fairly new player in the leisure travel field, we want to offer the best and most advanced, and are convinced this all new Inflight VR concept will greatly contribute to making the travel experience on board our aircraft much more pleasant, while also helping us push our ancillary revenues to the next level”.

“We are the largest AirFi user in the world. Every day on board our 28 aircraft there are around 200 AirFi boxes flying around, and our largest base in Katowice (Poland) accommodates 80 of them. As a young company, we are always hungry for new. So that is why we are extremely happy that we can put some innovation onboard and participate in the new project together with Inflight VR” says Piotr Bożyk Senior Inflight Specialist at Small Planet Airlines responsible for the AirFi project.

Using a highly ergonomic, fully stand-alone and autonomous headset, Small Planet passengers can get completely immersed into a virtual reality world, hereby forgetting they are in a space-restricted cabin. They will not only be able to watch videos or a theatre play in VR, but can also explore interesting places as if they were there. They can, seamlessly practise certain relaxing activities, go VR shopping, or enjoy some conventional gaming.

The programme contents, developed in this instance in partnership with connectivity provider AirFi, are fully tailored to Small Planet’s specific requirements and adapted to the inflight environment, hereby avoiding any risk of potential motion sickness. “AirFi always likes to be in the forefront of supporting cabin innovations and Inflight VR is a great example of this”, comments AirFi CEO Job Heimerikx.

Furthermore, through its partnership with logistics and duty-free provider TRE³, Inflight VR provides the airlines with the benefit of generating additional ancillary revenues through a series of sales opportunities on premium contents and other such programmes, including gaming and VR connection to outside vendors. “As innovation and technology is part of the TRE³ core business, we are delighted to participate in the Virtual Reality (VR) journey of the aviation world with Inflight VR. With pride, we are serving Small Planet as the first customer to bring passenger experience to new heights!”, says TRE³’ Country Manager Jalal Zriouil.

“Seeing a young, dynamic and forward-looking carrier like Small Planet select our in-flight VR entertainment system is a great endorsement of our concept”, adds Inflight VR Chief Commercial Officer Raphael Baumann. “We look very much forward to the deployment of this partnership and its subsequent successful expansion”.

DRM-protected movies NOW available without app

DRM-protected movies NOW available without app

Thomas Cook Group Airlines more than triples AirFi equipped aircraft for Summer 2018 season and Warner Bros named first major Hollywood Studio to approve its non-App browser-based DRM technology.

AirFi Wireless IFE is expanding from 10 aircraft last year to 34 Thomas Cook and Condor short-haul leased aircraft. AirFi clients now have access to Warner Brothers’ extensive Wi-Fi streaming catalogue – all without the need for passengers to preload an App.

March 22, 2018 – THE HAGUE:  AirFi, the market-leading provider of portable, wireless IFE and onboard digital cabin management platforms, reveals two major developments ahead of its busiest ever summer season.

Thomas Cook Group Airlines confirmed at AirFi’s inaugural Innovation Day last week that it will expand the number of AirFi equipped short-haul leased aircraft from 10 in 2017 to 34 for the summer 2018 season.

In addition, AirFi also announced that it has received formal approval from Warner Brothers – the first of the six major Hollywood Studios – for its game-changing browser-based DRM technology that allows passengers to stream DRM-protected content without the need to download Apps in advance.

“Passenger feedback shows they want IFE on the short-haul leased aircraft we use during the summer and we have seen conversion for browser-based IFE like AirFi is a lot higher than an app-based IFE. This summer we will have an enhanced content selection, integrated sales of AirFi premium access codes through the crew’s onboard sales devices, enhanced complimentary destination content and we will be introducing new ways to drive revenues through content-related advertising.” commented Tracy Barr, Head of Product at Thomas Cook Group Airlines.

Enabling clients to gain access to the widest possible choice of premium content, yet keep to the core principle of universal access for any device – via a browser not an app – has been a motivating factor for AirFi.

Together with preferred CSP West Entertainment, AirFi introduced non-DRM content from a number of highly supportive leading APEX distributors early last year, including the independent Hollywood studios and major TV distributors like Turner, CBS, ITV, Discovery and BBC.

Gaining the first approval for non-App DRM content is another watershed moment for AirFi.

“We are delighted to announce AirFi will be featuring content from the iconic Warner Bros studios. We serve a great many leisure traveller-focused airlines around the world so as you can imagine there is huge excitement to offer passengers blockbuster movies and hit TV series from the WB stable such as DC Comics, LEGO, Lara Croft, Harry Potter and Big Bang Theory.” added Martin Cunnison, CCO AirFi

Find out more about the latest digital innovations AirFi are bringing to market to elevate the passenger and crew experience at Booth 2E65 at the Aircraft Interiors Expo in Hamburg, April 10-12.

Thomas Cook Group Airlines to expand Sunstream wireless IFE offering with AirFi, as latest plans are unveiled at AirFi’s inaugural Innovation Day

Thomas Cook Group Airlines to expand Sunstream wireless IFE offering with AirFi, as latest plans are unveiled at AirFi’s inaugural Innovation Day

March 14 – THE HAGUE: Speaking at last week’s AirFi Innovation Day in The Hague, Tracy Barr, Head of Product, Thomas Cook Group Airlines, revealed that 34 aircraft will be flying with the AirFi Wireless IFE platform this summer season; an increase of 24 compared to last year. “Passenger feedback shows that they want IFE included on the short-haul leased aircraft that we use during the summer,” she said.

Passengers connect to the AirFi service and stream content via a browser, removing the need to download an app ahead of the flight. Thomas Cook’s own content can be accessed for free, while other content – including movies, TV shows, viral videos, magazines and games – can be accessed for €4/£4.

“We have seen that the conversion for browser-based IFE like AirFi is a lot higher than an app-based IFE,” Barr stated. ”This summer we will have an enhanced content selection, integrated sales of AirFi premium access codes through the crew’s onboard sales devices, enhanced complimentary destination content and we will be introducing new ways to drive revenues through content-related advertising.

Meanwhile, during the AirFi Innovation Day, which also included the opening of the company’s awesome new HQ in The Hague, AirFi revealed a number of product enhancements that are currently in the works.

It is working with as-yet-unnamed antenna providers with a view to expanding its offer to include connectivity that supports low-bandwidth applications such as instant messaging and real-time transaction verification inflight.

And that the Venus AirFi Box – the latest version of the company’s portable IFE solution – now supports fully-autonomous operations, thanks to in-built technology that gives it real-time location and state awareness. Automating the process of the boxes switching on and off, configuring flight details and transferring data to and from the aircraft to the cloud, and so removing the need for flight crew to manually undertake these tasks.

February 27, 2018 – SINGAPORE:  AirFi, provider of the market-leading portable onboard WiFi platform and one of the fastest-growing onboard cabin management technology suites, announced today major new growth milestones achieved. These new deals firmly establish AirFi, here in Asia-Pacific, the world’s fastest-growing aviation region.

Only three months after signing a joint venture agreement to form AirFi Indonesia – at a previous trade show event here in Singapore – the newly fledged company announced today it has inked deals with home-based airlines Sriwijaya and NAM Air.

“I’m thrilled to announce the signing of our first two AirFi Indonesia client airlines. Sriwijaya are Indonesia’s third largest airline, operating an all-Boeing 737 fleet of 40 aircraft. NAM Air is the feeder airline subsidiary of Sriwijaya, operating a fleet of 10 Boeing 757 and 5 ATR turboprops. Both airlines are now gearing up to launch the passenger-centric AirFi wireless IFE streaming platform and crew-centric Connected Crew onboard retailing EPOS system.” commented Satish Mahtani, AirFi Indonesia Managing Director.

In addition, the Netherlands headquartered group, also announced the formation of another landmark regional partner agreement, with major Singapore-based ground-handler and in-flight caterer serving Changi Airport.

“I’m again extremely proud to announce another landmark regional partner agreement. Mirroring our strategy in the Middle East and North Africa, we can now rapidly scale up our presence and capability across Asia-Pacific – which IATA forecast will see the biggest increase in passenger numbers over the next 20 years. Together with the successes at AirFi Indonesia, we have a really strong foundation to help more regional clients transform their onboard crew and passenger experiences.” commented Job Heimerikx, AirFi CEO.

AirFi now has three key operational hubs in the region – Bangalore India, Jakarta Indonesia and Singapore. The regional teams will be highly focused on driving up new digital ancillary revenues for our client base that AirFi wireless streaming and Connected Crew payment technologies can enable.
