Small Planet first airline to offer full Virtual Reality entertainment on board

Small Planet Airlines will begin offering virtual reality (VR) inflight entertainment on board some of its aircraft from 5th of September 2018. The fast-growing European leisure carrier has selected the Inflight VR solution, in a partnership with service provider Newrest’ TRE³ and connectivity provider AirFi, for offering its passengers the full benefit of virtual reality.

The service will initially be available on their Airbus A320s that are operated from Amsterdam to destinations in southern Europe such as the Canary Islands and Rhodes in Greece. After a successful implementation in the Netherlands, the plan is to progressively expand the service to further destinations towards the end of the year.

“We are very proud to be the first to offer this new in-flight entertainment feature to our passengers,” says Lina Griciuvienė Head of Inflight Services Division at Small Planet Airlines. “Being a fairly new player in the leisure travel field, we want to offer the best and most advanced, and are convinced this all new Inflight VR concept will greatly contribute to making the travel experience on board our aircraft much more pleasant, while also helping us push our ancillary revenues to the next level”.

Using a highly ergonomic, fully stand-alone and autonomous headset, Small Planet passengers can get completely immersed into a virtual reality world, hereby forgetting they are in a space-restricted cabin. They will not only be able to watch videos or a theatre play in VR, but can also explore interesting places as if they were there. They can, seamlessly practise certain relaxing activities, go VR shopping, or enjoy some conventional gaming.

The programme contents, developed in this instance in partnership with connectivity provider AirFi, are fully tailored to Small Planet’s specific requirements and adapted to the inflight environment, hereby avoiding any risk of potential motion sickness. “AirFi always likes to be in the forefront of supporting cabin innovations and Inflight VR is a great example of this”, comments AirFi CEO Job Heimerikx.

Furthermore, through its partnership with logistics and duty-free provider TRE³, Inflight VR provides the airlines with the benefit of generating additional ancillary revenues through a series of sales opportunities on premium contents and other such programmes, including gaming and VR connection to outside vendors. “As innovation and technology is part of the TRE³ core business, we are delighted to participate in the Virtual Reality (VR) journey of the aviation world with Inflight VR. Thomas Cook Group Airlines more than triples AirFi equipped aircraft for Summer 2018 season and Warner Bros named first major Hollywood Studio to approve its non-App browser-based DRM technology.

AirFi Wireless IFE is expanding from 10 aircraft last year to 34 Thomas Cook and Condor short-haul leased aircraft. AirFi clients now have access to Warner Brothers’ extensive Wi-Fi streaming catalogue – all without the need for passengers to preload an App.

March 22, 2018 – THE HAGUE:  AirFi, the market-leading provider of portable, wireless IFE and onboard digital cabin management platforms, reveals two major developments ahead of its busiest ever summer season.

Thomas Cook Group Airlines confirmed at AirFi’s inaugural Innovation Day last week that it will expand the number of AirFi equipped short-haul leased aircraft from 10 in 2017 to 34 for the summer 2018 season.

In addition, AirFi also announced that it has received formal approval from Warner Brothers – the first of the six major Hollywood Studios – for its game-changing browser-based DRM technology that allows passengers to stream DRM-protected content without the need to download Apps in advance.

Enabling clients to gain access to the widest possible choice of premium content, yet keep to the core principle of universal access for any device – via a browser not an app – has been a motivating factor for AirFi.

Together with preferred CSP West Entertainment, AirFi introduced non-DRM content from a number of highly supportive leading APEX distributors early last year, including the independent Hollywood studios and major TV distributors like Turner, CBS, ITV, Discovery and BBC.

Gaining the first approval for non-App DRM content is another watershed moment for AirFi.

March 14 – THE HAGUE: Speaking at last week’s AirFi Innovation Day in The Hague, Tracy Barr, Head of Product, Thomas Cook Group Airlines, revealed that 34 aircraft will be flying with the AirFi Wireless IFE platform this summer season; an increase of 24 compared to last year. “Passenger feedback shows that they want IFE included on the short-haul leased aircraft that we use during the summer,” she said.

Passengers connect to the AirFi service and stream content via a browser, removing the need to download an app ahead of the flight. Thomas Cook’s own content can be accessed for free, while other content – including movies, TV shows, viral videos, magazines and games – can be accessed for €4/£4.

“We have seen that the conversion for browser-based IFE like AirFi is a lot higher than an app-based IFE,” Barr stated. ”This summer we will have an enhanced content selection, integrated sales of AirFi premium access codes through the crew’s onboard sales devices, enhanced complimentary destination content and we will be introducing new ways to drive revenues through content-related advertising.

Meanwhile, during the AirFi Innovation Day, which also included the opening of the company’s awesome new HQ in The Hague, AirFi revealed a number of product enhancements that are currently in the works.

It is working with as-yet-unnamed antenna providers with a view to expanding its offer to include connectivity that supports low-bandwidth applications such as instant messaging and real-time transaction verification inflight.

And that the Venus AirFi Box – the latest version of the company’s portable IFE solution – now supports fully-autonomous operations, thanks to in-built technology that gives it real-time location and state awareness. Automating the process of the boxes switching on and off, configuring flight details and transferring data to and from the aircraft to the cloud, and so removing the need for flight crew to manually undertake these tasks.

In recent months, AirFi secured formal security approval from a number of key IFE content suppliers, including major and independent Hollywood studios and TV distributors. Increasingly, these content sources are providing their premium content to AirFi without DRM (digital rights management) or by using AirFi’s “app-free” technology, where DRM is required.

“We based our new Premium Content offer on three simple tiered-pricing levels that start as low as €500 per package per aircraft per month,” says Heimerikx. “We can then flex these to meet individual airline requirements. Over half of our client base immediately responded with requests for proposals and our first Premium Content customers go live in May this year,” he adds.
